ROUND 1

1. sth. be an arduous process

=sth. be an tiring process that requires a great deal of effort

(某事是一個需要付出艱苦努力的過程)

eg. Attending a university with a top-tier reputation often is an arduous but rewarding process.

拓展：

1）be very rewarding有回報的

=making someone feel satisfied

eg. Teaching can be a very rewarding career.

教學是一項回報豐厚的事業(yè)。

 

2）Someone’s aspiration/pursuit

=someone’s strong wish for achievement

中文含義：夢想（應試時替代dream的地道表達）

eg. The educational aspiration/pursuits of rural youth tend to be different from those of students living elsewhere.

相比其他地方的孩子，農村孩子在教育的追求和渴求是大不相同的。

 

2.rote memorization

= a learning technique that focuses on learning by repetition

中文含義：機械記憶

eg. Rote memorization is not entirely useless. It can help children to learn the basics such as the multiplication tables.

死記硬背并非一無是處。它可以幫助孩子牢記像乘法表達這樣的基礎知識。

2）break the mould

=change a situation by doing sth. unprecedented

eg. He made an attempt to break the mould of British politics.

=（of subjects or courses）deal with much information and many facts

eg. We’ve covered a lot of ground in this class in the past couple of months.

2）comprehensive coverage of sth.

=include many details or aspects of sth.

中文含義：廣泛涉及某方面的知識

eg. The impression is that the logical nature of the text books and their comprehensive coverage of different types of examples renders work sheets unnecessary.（出自雅思閱讀）
