This year’s Mid-Autumn Festival was no exception. In the afternoon, we went to a Hunan restaurant near my grandmother"s house. The service at this restaurant was exceptional. In addition to offering free mooncakes to every guest, the waiters enthusiastically introduced the dishes and recommended the specialties. Their smiles and patience made us feel the warmth of home.After the meal, we visited a park, which is a place we go to every year during the Mid-Autumn Festival. In the park,many artisans showcased their skills. Some people used gigantic brushes to write beautiful ancient Chinese characters on the ground, while others made sugar paintings with special instruments. There were also people playing with toys that were only seen in the last century, like stilt walking. These experiences made me feel a different atmosphere compared to modern life and helped me learn some historical and cultural knowledge.While strolling through the park, my elementary school-aged nephew ran over to seek my help. His teacher had asked them to make a handmade product related to the Mid-Autumn Festival, and he had no idea how to start. After thinking for a moment, I suggested making mooncakes. My nephew was very happy to hear this, so we decided to make mooncakes together.I found a mooncake tutorial video on Xiaohongshu and prepared the ingredients and tools needed for making mooncakes according to the steps in the video, including the oven that I had wanted to replace for a long time. This oven was a prize I won at a company annual meeting, but because of my busy work schedule, I had never had time to use it. Recently, air fryers have become very popular with many functions, so I wanted to replace my oven.Although I had never used an oven before, I started the process with confidence. I followed the video step-by-step to prepare the mooncake dough and filling, then wrapped the filling in the mooncake dough, and finally placed the wrapped mooncakes into the oven for baking. However, when I opened the oven, I found that the mooncakes did not look ideal; their color was uneven, and some parts were burnt. When I tasted one, it did not taste great; the dough was hard, and the filling lacked flavor.I felt a bit disappointed, but I did not give up. I carefully watched the steps in the video again and checked my own process to find some issues. It turned out that I had not mastered the time and temperature while baking, which caused the mooncakes to burn. I also realized that I had not wrapped the filling tightly enough, which led to the mooncakes cracking during baking. Having identified the problems, I decided to make the mooncakes again. This time, I followed the video instructions more carefully, paying attention to the time and temperature, and ensuring that the filling was well-wrapped. When I opened the oven again, I saw that the mooncakes had improved significantly: they were evenly colored and golden brown on the surface. After tasting one, I found it delicious; the crust was crispy, and the filling was sweet and flavorful.I successfully helped my nephew make a satisfactory salted egg yolk mooncake, and I felt very happy and proud. Through this experience of making mooncakes, I also understood a principle: "Only when you need to use it do you regret not having learned it." It is through practical operation that we can truly master knowledge and skills. At the same time, I realized my shortcomings in cooking, and I decided to learn more cooking knowledge in the future to improve my culinary skills.In the end, we returned to my grandmother"s house with the mooncakes we made and shared this sweetness and joy with our family. This Mid-Autumn Festival not only allowed me to learn some historical and cultural knowledge, but I also gained valuable experience and a sense of accomplishment.
